It was a beautiful hot summer day with temperatures in the 80's today. We tried again for the parrots/parakeets, nope! After lunch we checked out and drove Colleen to the airport. It took 8 minutes to get there. The McAllen International Airport is a small quaint airport. A one story building with departures at one end and arrivals at the other end. Gosh have not seen anything like that in decades. We hope that Colleen made her flights is by now is one her way to Lakeland. We will miss you Colleen!
The drive to South Padre was fine and we saw a White-tailed Kite hunting about 10 miles before Port Isabelle. We checked into the hotel and then we did a bit of shopping at a big beach store next door to the hotel and then another one across the street caught our attention. By 3:30 pm we were walking the hard packed sand beach. It was lovely. The surf was strong but one could still walk in it. There were some shorebirds around like Sanderling and Willet. We noticed a lot of new development in Port Isabelle and on South Padre Island too since the last time we were here (4 years ago for me and five for Barbr). But thankfully the island is still on the quaint side. After leaving the beach side we crossed the only road down the island and went over to the bay side where there were tons of shorebirds. Royal Tern, Black Skimmer, and Short-billed Dowitcher. This bay faced the setting sun so it was hard to look among the hundreds of gulls (mostly Laughing and Ring-billed Gulls).
We had another nice surprise with the lovely sunset over the causeway. We took several photos before we had supper. I find this island very similar to New Smyrna Beach or Daytona Shores just more remote and a very narrow island. Once can walk across in less than15 minutes from gulf side to bay side and it is very flat.
