We left the Alamo Inn this morning and headed west on highway 83 West. After Roma, the highway opens up and the vista was great. There was little traffic on the highway and even a detour through a farmer's farm field road around Sunday afternoon highway roadwork.
We drove into Bravo Park by the Zapata Public Library. We walked around the library and saw some usual suspects; Green Jay, Couch's or Tropical Kingbird, Great Kiskadee, Common Yellow-throat, Orange-crowned Warbler, tons of Great-tailed Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds. There was a Common Galinule on the pond. The area specialty was the White-collared Seedeater but we did not see them.
From here we continued driving to the San Ygnacio Bird Sanctuary and Riverfront. This is a historic old village right on the Rio Grande and believe it or not, finally a stretch of the river that lives up to its name; a big river! We walked the grounds and the fellow who was working there told us that he had heard the Taumalipas Crow when we were there and it sounds like a frog. We did hear a sound like a frog but thought it was a frog. The sanctuary is a work in progress and it is lovely. There is bird feed in many locations but few birds. The fellow said that the birds are there at 8 am coming from all over for the feed. We took it easy here as it was in the 90's but the sun would get covered and there was a breeze from the river and it was comfortable. The sun would come out and it would be stinking hot.
From here were followed directions in our updated travel brochure for birding the area that turned out to be incorrect but luckily for Barbr, it was a good diversion as she got some photos of her favourite Crested Caracara!! We figured it out that there was no lookout down this road and continued on Highway 83 W and five miles on....a lookout over the Rio Grande and it was wonderful.
By this time it was after 3 pm and we continued on to Laredo and our motel (La Quinta). We had supper and then took a short drive to the old section of the Laredo and ended up near the walking bridge to Mexico. It was sunset so we did not linger in the mostly deserted streets with the odd person about. We will try for earlier tomorrow as we want to look over the Rio Grande here. Red-billed Pigeons from Mexico were reported in Laredo.
This place is very Mexican, we almost feel like we are in Mexico. This illustrates that close ties these border towns have with each other. Locals go over to Mexico and Mexicans visit here. Lots of Taumalipas, Mexico license plates in town. This is the fact all along the Rio Grande.
